Core Principles:

1. Focusing on functional and adaptive skill development

I have found that creativity and flexible thinking are key to making learning accessible and enjoyable for children who do not learn the typical way.

Behaviour programming must be relevant and organic, where programs and targets are adapted according to the needs of the child and the family unit as they grow and change.

2. Making use of a child’s strengths and interests

Just like any typically developing children, no two children with autism have exactly the same interests or motivations. When designing programs it is imperative to closely consider what each child finds motivating and reinforcing, and weave that into the fabric of their behaviour program.

Reinforcement is not what we think they should like but rather what excites them and naturally captures their attention. By harnessing this interest we will foster ready and eager learners.

3. Including parental input during goal development

Working collaboratively with parents and caregivers is integral to my behaviour programs. I value parents as experts in their child, and believe that empowering them with the skills and knowledge to be active participants in the intervention process is key for achieving long-term success.
